Best (Gooseneck) kettles for making Pour Over coffee at home

Here at RiSE coffee box, we've been using a Gooseneck Kettle for the last 2 years and swear by it for making the best pour over coffee. If you like to enjoy your coffee using any pour over method (V60/Kalita or Chemex - some of the most popular pieces of equipment) then you'll need to invest in a gooseneck kettle. The big question is, Why?

The main reasons why you should use a Gooseneck Kettle for making Pour Over coffee are:

  • Accuracy of water measurements

  • Ensuring the right temperature

  • Better pouring accuracy

All of which lead to better extraction (extraction being a very sciency-sounding word for drawing out the qualities of coffee)

So, which kettle to choose?

There are some excellent articles and blogs with top ten lists about coffee kettles, but we wanted to keep things simple. So here are our top three, one lower price point, one mid range and one that causes a more serious dent in your wallet or purse!

BEST FOR Saving pennies:

Melitta Pour Over Kettle, £25

This German coffee brand is the maker of many pieces of economical brewing equipment. This kettle is a stove top kettle, which means it doesn't have any of the fancy controls that an electric one can offer. It has an insulated handle, which means you can use it without hurting yourself (not all of the kettles we tried offer this!). It holds 700ml which makes it perfect to travel around with. At £25 it’s a great value solution, giving you a precise pour, whilst looking very elegant.

BEST MID RANGE OPTION:

Hario V60 Buono Drip Kettle - 1.2L, £60

From the reputable Hario, we really liked this kettle for its value for money, excellent precision and comfy handle. It comes in different sizes, and the capacity of 1.2L is more than enough for any pour over method! We pretty much swear by Hario in our house and love all of their V60 coffee drippers, so if you’re like us and already trust Hario, it makes sense to keep in the family and go with this option.

Here's what Hario had to say about their kettle: "The low-mounted spout and a high-mounted easy-to-grip handle, allows you to take total control of the flow-rate. For this reason the Hario kettle is ideally used with V60 dripper brewing method. If you are familiar with it, then you know how important it is to pour the hot water over the coffee in an even and steady circular motion. Intuitive Hario kettle design makes it easy to do that and allows you to brew a perfect cup of drip coffee.

This is the largest Hario Buono V60 kettle with capacity of 1.2 litres. The stainless steel body with flat-bottom makes it durable, easy to clean and enables you to use it on any kind of heater. Overall the Hario kettle is smartly designed and makes a perfect tool for brewing great V60 pour over coffee."
