2. Coffee plant - Less than £20 at Bloompost
Coffee, technically is a fruit. The coffee beans are seeds that sit inside a layered casing called the cascara or more commonly called the coffee cherry. Coffee plants are quite picky when it comes to climate and Alice has accidentally killed a couple of these. They do make for nice house plants!
They can be found online on websites such as BloomPost
The plants like bright, sunny spots in your home, and they love high humidity and should be sprayed with water frequently.
The coffee plant doesn't usually grow in your home much higher than 1.5 m it gets bushier in time. If you can keep it longer than our Co-Founder Alice did, the coffee plant begins to grow fragrant, white flowers. This can take up to 5 years! If you are dedicated, the plant can grow red cherries that each contain a couple of coffee beans. If the berries go red after several months, you can harvest them in your garden! Dry them in a warm place and then roast for 10 to 20 minutes on high heat in a frying pan. Leave the beans to rest for a couple of days and then grind. Now you have become a barista at home as well as a coffee farmer!
3. Coffee magazine subscription
Starting from £2.75 per month, our two favourite magazines in the world of coffee are Caffeine mag & Standart
A great way to stay in touch with the coffee scene, read about the hottest roasters around and new cafes popping up. You can also learn about sustainability, fair wages for farmers and changes in the market. We read a really interesting article in the last edition of Caffeine mag about the price of flat whites going up to £5!!
You can also find Caffeine mag inside the RiSE box every three months - so if gift a RiSE coffee gift subscription, you get the coolest gift!
