Discovering 'Hacienda Alsacia': The Starbucks Coffee Farm in Costa Rica
Discovering Hacienda Alsacia: The Starbucks Coffee Farm in Costa Rica
Nestled in the lush hills of Costa Rica, Hacienda Alsacia is not just any coffee farm; it’s the crown jewel of Starbucks’ coffee sourcing efforts. Alice and I stumbled across it on a recent trip to Costa Rica, on the drive between San Jose and Volcan Poas (an active Volcano). With a backdrop of stunning volcanoes and vibrant wildlife, this farm is a paradise for coffee lovers and nature enthusiasts alike. Of course when in the UK, Starbucks wouldn't be our coffee of choice (!) but the focus of this farm is on high quality Arabica, innovation in sourcing and sustainability, so it was definitely worth a stop for a quick look, and some coffee of course!
When we first arrived we were overwhelmed by the enchanting setting, spanning over 240 acres, with incredible panoramic views across the farm. Here's a picture of me (Ben) taking in the views!
The history of the Hacienda
Hacienda Alsacia opened its doors in 2015, marking Starbucks' first-ever coffee farm. The aim? To create a sustainable model and example that supports local farmers while producing the highest quality coffee beans.
At Hacienda Alsacia, coffee cultivation is a blend of traditional farming techniques and cutting-edge science. The farm employs innovative agricultural practices to ensure the health of the coffee plants and the surrounding ecosystem. From soil health to pest management, every detail is meticulously managed. And let’s not forget the coffee plants themselves—Hacienda Alsacia is home to a variety of Arabica beans, each with its unique flavour profile.

A Taste of Costa Rica
Now, let’s talk about the coffee! The beans produced at Hacienda Alsacia are rich, complex, and bursting with flavour. Thanks to the farm’s unique microclimate, the coffee has a distinct profile that reflects the terroir of the region. Whether you prefer a smooth medium roast or a bold dark blend, there’s something for everyone - they even have a section of the farm showcasing all different types of roasts, educating passers by on the difference between roasts.
Sustainability at Stabucks' Hacienda
As climate change poses challenges to coffee production worldwide, Hacienda Alsacia is working hard to find solutions. The farm is involved in research initiatives aimed at developing coffee varieties that are more resilient to changing weather patterns. They are also working hard on reforestation efforts, water conservation, and the use of renewable energy sources.
Coffee Culture in Costa Rica
Costa Rica is renowned for its coffee culture, and Hacienda Alsacia is at the heart of it. The country’s ideal climate, rich volcanic soil, and dedication to quality make it one of the top coffee producers in the world. Coffee isn’t just a beverage here; it’s a way of life. From the bustling markets to the quaint cafes, you’ll find coffee being celebrated in every corner. On our recent trip to Costa Rica we were overwhelmed by the quality of coffee pretty much everywhere, and many of the cafes hosted "coffee parties" on a Saturday morning with tastings and music. We loved it!
If you're ever near San Jose it's definitely worth a stop. Just be sure to bring your camera—Instagram won’t know what hit it!
